Executive Insights from Day 2 of Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo Barcelona

How IT Leaders Should Plan for Digital Delivery in 2024

As departments outside of IT take more ownership of digital delivery, CxO expectations of CIOs are changing. Daniel Sánchez Reina, Gartner VP Analyst, revealed what, in this environment, belongs on CIOs’ agendas for the coming 18 months, and how they can shift their expectations for their role and organization.

In 2024, focus on:

  • Co-leading: Look across the enterprise for business leaders who seek and drive high levels of collaboration and transparency with IT.

  • Co-delivering: Make and keep joint commitments to maximize the investments and outcomes of digital initiatives, as well as evolving IT’s role.

  • Co-governing: Collaboratively establish the guardrails and guidelines that will work best for your unique situation — and share accountability for governance.

“Generative AI turbocharges the democratization of digital delivery.”

Daniel Sánchez Reina, VP Analyst at Gartner

Will You Have a Digital Twin of the Employee?

A digital twin is a dynamic, virtual representation of a person that simulates and learns to anticipate and emulate behavior. Helen Poitevin, Gartner Distinguished VP Analyst, explored how to bring this seemingly futuristic idea to life today by examining the risks and benefits of such capabilities.

Helen speaking at Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo, Barcelona

“Digital twins of employees will rely on data about how and where we work, what we prefer, etc. And the more we want them to match us, the more we need to share so that we can be in step with each other.”

Helen Poitevin, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner

Digital twins of employees can benefit the workplace by:

  1. Developing skills to improve performance: Make employees aware of trainings and career development opportunities.

  2. Giving advice to support productivity: Deliver information when it is most useful to fuel performance.

  3. Removing friction and providing fixes proactively: Offer support or mend broken systems before anyone realizes there is an issue.

  4. Maintaining a secure and physically safe environment: Digital modeling contributes to the safety of employees and workplace solutions.

Effective Strategies to Attract and Hire Top IT Talent

A dearth of data-driven insights into the IT labor market results in wasted recruiting efforts, a slim pipeline of mediocre talent and stalled digital initiatives, all at a cost to the organization. Relying on research into top attraction drivers, Gartner Sr Director Analyst Mbula Schoen disclosed how to apply five effective strategies to hire top IT talent.

“Workforce has risen to become the third most important priority area for CEOs in 2023 and 2024.”

Mbula Schoen, Sr Director Analyst at Gartner

Apply these best practices to attract strong IT talent:

  1. Tap into the large pool of passive IT candidates: Ramp up employee referral programs, and use talent intelligence capabilities that leverage AI to source outbound talent.

  2. Redesign IT job postings to be more inclusive: Remove artificial borders by hiring for potential, not credentials.

  3. Build your IT organization’s brand with an EVP: Differentiate messaging so its employee value proposition stands out from that of the rest of the enterprise.

  4. Embed candidate needs early in the hiring process: Companies need robust “keep warm” strategies, especially when candidates have long delays between acceptance and start dates.

  5. Champion implementation of multiple flexible work models: Flexibility in both working hours and location remains a valuable differentiator.
